Adventures in Pretension: At Wit’s End

Contributed by M. Wolfgang Utzschneider

Hey, how’s it going GW? Me, I’m pretty good – just saw Le Mépris, it was divine; although I thought Coutard’s camera moved better in À Bout de Souffle. Yes, yes, I know what you’re thinking: at this level of film such criticisms are mere superfluous noise, semantic rumbling – for sublimity cannot be weighed against itself. But enough of me, have you seen any good films recently?

Oh, Pirates of the Caribbean, the Curse of the Dead Man’s Chest at The End of the World? No, I haven’t seen that one, because, you see, I like to watch films with content – but to each his own.

Did you like it?

Oh, it was entertaining? You mean it transported you to far-away lands of phantasy, liberated from the constant domination and bureaucratic rationalism of modern life? It moved you with images of beauty, expressions of pure humanity that elevate the soul to contemplation of our inevitable mortality?

Oh, no it didn’t do that? I see, you liked it because there was stuff happening all the time, with bright shiny bits and naughty bits and funny bits and so many bits and pieces it just rolled into a big ball of fun!

Man, now I so want to see it. It sounds just like something an interesting, exuberant, creative person would enjoy. Thanks for broadening my horizons and making my short time here at GW fulfilling.

Agreed. However, I believe that was the point.

Did M. Wolfgang actually post this, or is it poking fun at him? It could go either way.

it actually goes both ways
